Hello, my name is Martina. I am a nurse, and I work in a university in Dublin. I am doing a project to find out what children and young people think we should be teaching student nurses about how to talk and listen to children.
I am keen to hear the views of lots of children and young people. I want to hear about your experiences with communication and what you think is really important for student nurses to understand. Your ideas will help us teach student nurses how to better talk and listen to children and young people.
Why am I being asked to join in?
No, you don’t. It’s your choice if you want to take part. If you change your mind at any point during the activity session and decide you don’t want to continue, that’s totally fine. A teacher will help you return to your regular class activities.
Do I have to join in?
If you’d like to join in, you’ll be part of a group discussion with other students from your year group. We will be doing some fun activities together like:
Talking about how nurse and children communicate with each other
Brainstorming ideas on sticky notes
Ranking your ideas to show what you think is most important
This will happen in a classroom in your school and will take about one lesson (45-50 minutes). Sometimes, I might bring someone to help me. Your friends, teachers, and other adults you know will be there with us.
I will audio-record our group discussion to help me remember all the important things you tell me. You do not have to answer any questions you don’t want to. There are no right or wrong answers. You can stop taking part in in the activity sessions or take a break at any time without giving a reason, no-one will mind.
What will happen if I want to join in?
What are the good things about joining in?
We hope that you will enjoy taking part. We believe your ideas can help shape and improve how student children’s nurses talk and listen to children and young people in the future.
Are there any bad things about joining in?
We know that thinking about healthcare experiences might feel a bit upsetting. If that happens, we will be there to help and support you, along with your teacher. Your principal will also be available if needed. You can stop taking part, or take a break, at any point, just let us know, we won’t mind.
Will anyone else know that I’m doing this?
No-one will know you took part except for your parents or guardians and your classmates who join in the group discussion. Anything you share with me will remain confidential unless I am concerned about your safety or well-being. When we write about the project, your name and school details will not be shared.
If you would like to join in, just let your parents or guardians know. I’ll send some information about these activities to them.
How do I take part?
Thanks for reading this!
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me when I visit, or you can ask your parents or guardians to contact me.
