Hello, my name is Martina. I am a nurse, and I work in a college in Dublin. I am doing a project to find out what children think we should be teaching student nurses about how to talk and listen to children.

I am keen to hear the views of lots of children and what you think is really important for student nurses to know about talking and listening. Your ideas will help student nurses learn how to talk and listen to children.

Why am I being asked to join in?

No, you don’t. It's your choice if you want to join in. If you change your mind at any time during our activities, that's totally okay. Just tell us, and you can do other fun activities with your teacher

Do I have to join in?

If you’d like to join in, we will be doing activities like talking, drawing and colouring with the class to hear your great ideas. I will ask you questions about how nurses can talk and listen to children. This will happen in your classroom and will take about one lesson (40-45 minutes). Sometimes, I might bring someone to help me. Your friends, teachers, and other grown-ups you know in the school will be there with us.

I will audio-record the class talking and take some pictures of your drawings, to help me remember all the important things you tell me. You don’t have to answer any questions you don’t want to. There are no right or wrong answers. You can stop taking part, or take a rest, at any time without giving a reason, no-one will mind.

What will happen if I want to join in?

What are the good things about joining in?

We hope you will have fun joining in. We believe your ideas can help make things better for how student nurses talk and listen to children and young people.

Are there any bad things about joining in?

We know that thinking about times you were with nurses might feel a bit upsetting. If that happens, we will be there to help and support you, and your teacher will be too. Your principal will also be there if needed. You can stop taking part, or take a rest, at any time, just let us know, we won’t mind.

Will anyone else know that I’m doing this?

No-one will know you and your classmates took part except for your parents or guardians and your classmates. Anything you share with me will stay private unless I am worried about something you have shared with me. When we write about this project, your name and school will not be shared.

If you would like to join in, just let your parents or know. I’ll send some information about these activities to them.

How do I take part?

Thanks for reading this!

If you have any questions, you can ask me when I visit or you can ask your parents or guardians to talk to me.
