My name is Martina, and I am a children’s nurse working in a university in Dublin. I'm carrying out a project at your child's school. We want to hear directly from children about what they think student nurses should learn when it comes to talking and listening to children and young people.
We would like to invite your child & their classmates to join in. Your child's ideas are important. We want to hear about their experiences with communication and what they believe is important for children's nurses to know. This will help us design communication training for future nurses who work with children and young people.
Your child and their classmates will join Martina for fun, interactive activities, using animated images, sticky notes and drawing, to talk about:
What communication is.
Different ways we communicate (beyond just words, like body language or facial expressions).
What communication skills should nurses have.
What good and not-so-good communication looks and feels like from their perspective.
To make sure we remember all their brilliant ideas, we’ll be audio-recording the discussions.
It is completely up to you and your child if they take part in this project. Your child doesn't have to join this project if they don't want to. It's their choice. If they do join in and then change their mind at any point, that’s totally okay.
We understand that sometimes thinking about previous healthcare experiences can be upsetting. We will be there to offer support, along with their teacher.
Your child’s involvement in this study will be completely anonymous and confidential. We won’t collect any information that tells us who your child is or what school they attend.
Anything your child shares with us will be kept private. If your child shares something that makes us worried about their safety or the safety of someone else, we would have to share this information with the appropriate professionals outside of our research team.
There is much more information about the project and how we will use your child’s information available below.
